Back around the time we moved into our house my mom gave us a doormat as a housewarming gift. It was great because it was useful and of course we appreciated the gesture. Over time though it started to get worn out and leave a stain on my deck from when it would rain and moisture sitting underneath. Not knowing what else to do with it, it sat in my backyard for almost a year waiting to be dealt with. Several times I’d thought about donating it but didn’t feel that would be a good idea since I wasn’t sure if it would find its way out to the thrift store floor with it being all worn. Plus it was a solid, good quality mat so just knew it could be used for something!
It wasn’t until one day I realized the back was a blank canvas and I could use it with that side up. Liking both that we had an indoor mat to wipe off feet by our front door & the idea of having a place to set our shoes when we come in from the backyard, I thought ‘what if I brought it inside?’ But you could see the dip where the text was printed which made it kind of obvious that it had been flipped over. That’s when the light bulb went off and I decided to paint it! I’d seen something similar on Pinterest before thinking it’d be a great idea to use up some old paints. So between coats while painting the kitchen I added in this little project. I had all the supplies needed already on hand so it cost $0 to complete!
Here’s how I turned an old outside doormat into a decorative floor mat:
1. Clean off & let dry thoroughly.
2. Cover with a paint+primer white spray paint.
3. Tape cool geometrical pattern using painter’s tape.
4. Paint inside the shapes using different colors of leftover sample paint.
5. Remove tape before setting aside to dry thoroughly.
6. Put into place and bask. 🙂
In hindsight I probably should have painted the sides too. I may go back and do this another day once I’ve knocked a few other things off my to-do list. In the mean time I still think it looks better and enjoy that it’s finally being used again rather than junking up my yard or potentially sitting in a landfill. 🙂
